Callidus building:

During the development of the new building, the word "sustainable" is written in capitals. The aim is optimization of comfort and energy-efficiency. For this, in cooperation with Tromp Partners Architects (TPA) and AMIC, an integral design was made conform the principles of the Trias Energetica. This implies the energy demand is reduced to a minimum while this remaining demand for heat or cooling is generated at maximum efficiency.

The design of the building:

Callidus Group is a young, robust and dynamic company with strong ambitions; such a company demands a suitable design. The building consists of two parts: an office block and a workshop facility, a combination of thinking and acting.

These two parts both have a basic robust and straightforward shape, which generates a firm image. The design characteristic is resulting from the way the parts are combined and displayed towards the main route A7.

The lower office block is placed asymmetrically in front of the transparent length of the workshop facility. By giving the workshop a firm overhang on this side, a dynamic relationship between the two volumes is introduced. The organisation of the office functions is of an understandable simplicity; around the central core, comprising facilitating services, the work- and meeting rooms are located both on ground and first level.

The workshop floor is open and free of columns to keep the whole floor accessible by the overhead cranes. This facilitates an efficient and straightforward operation.

By using modern, sustainable and technical materials, glass and metal, the building gets a young and present look.

Location:

The positioning of the building on the grounds is determined strategically to be clearly visible from both A7 and the approach route “Woudfennen”.

Design of the technical installation:

The demand for heat and cooling is reduced by using an optimally insulated building shell combined with a ventilation system with integrated high efficiency heat recuperation. In the workshop facility, transparent Rodeca elements are used. These have a low heat transfer coefficient, sun-reflecting capacities and a high transparency for light. The electricity consumption and internal heat load is limited by using energy efficient lighting, equipped with daylight-sensors and/or presence-detection.

For the heating and cooling of the building a single source (without boiler installation) geothermal heat pump system with closed vertical earth loops is used.
During winter, this uses heat from the earth, whilst during summer the heat from the building is transferred towards the earth.
The heat pump provides the comfortable temperature levels by radiating or absorbing heat via the floor heating system. This floor heating system covers the main demand for heat and cooling, with the major advantage that in the workshop area only the working zone, and not the whole volume of the building, is conditioned.

For optimum comfort, the offices are equipped with individual ceiling units for extra capacity to govern the local climates individually. The layout of the system is such that with demand for cooling in the offices, the workshop can be heated simultaneously using the surplus heat of the offices.

The overall result: Callidus has a very comfortable and energy-efficient building that, using electricity generated sustainably, is prepared for a successful and completely emission free future.
